“Vienna before the Night” is an essayistic journey through time by the French documentary filmmaker Robert Bober. A very personal retrospective of Robert Bober, of the time of the First World War and the rise of National Socialism, which meant the end of Vienna as a cultural capital. He explores a Vienna that had a different meaning about 100 years ago.
On the basis of this story, Bober undertakes a very personal examination of the city of Vienna and its Jewish life before the Shoa. An imperfect but poetic reconstruction of historical Vienna saves time and circumstances from oblivion and at the same time shows that memory is only possible in this way: as an approximation of the past, which does not cover the disappearance or the absent, but as such keeps it conscious and reflects.
