1918 – Aufstand der Matrosen

The Kiel events in October and November 1918 represent a breaking point in German history. The mutiny of the sailors of III. Squadrons of the High Seas Fleet against the death squad of a senseless naval battle to save the German navy’s honour leads to the joint uprising of sailors and workers in Kiel. They thus herald the end of the German Empire and the beginning of the first German democracy, the Weimar Republic. For a brief moment, the city of Kiel is therefore the focus of German, even world history.
