A rabbi’s court in Tel Aviv, Israel. Viviane wants to divorce Elisha, her husband. But he does not agree. Israeli law is on Elisha’s side: it requires a divorce from a rabbi to be negotiated. And the man cannot be forced to divorce. So Viviane is at the mercy of Elisha.
GETT is about Viviane’s long breath, her tireless attempts to impose her desire. She endures strenuous, absurd hearings. It is downright trivial-comic, a Kafkaesque spectacle in which the accused has the plaintiff in his hand. The court understands Viviane’s wish, but his hands are tied. What will Elisha do?
