When Detective Chief Inspector Bernie Reid (Gabriel Byrne) arrives at the scene, he barely slept for weeks. He is on the verge of divorce, driving around the city for hours at night to come up with other thoughts. And now this murder in a London apartment. A man was slain. When Reid arrives, he is captured by a casual encounter with a mysterious woman. He sees her only in passing, but she exerts an immediate fascination with him, which does not let him go from the same moment. While his colleagues investigate the murder trail, Reid can only think of the unknown.
He finds out her identity – Anna Welles (Charlotte Rampling), who lives with her adult daughter Emmy – and begins to watch her secretly. One night, when he follows her to a single party, a conversation develops between them. Both are lost souls in the middle of an anonymous big city, and both find in the other the love and security that had been lost to them for years.
But then Anna is drawn into the murder investigation, and Reid’s professional interests get in the way of his private longing for closeness. As it becomes increasingly clear who Anna really is, a painful, hardly tolerable truth emerges…
