The renowned German scientist Alfred Wegener developed the theory in 1912 that all continents were originally connected. He called this “super continent” “Pangaea”. Despite the impending war, a German sea expedition was launched in the autumn of 1939 to prove Wegener’s theory. The sea voyage to the Arctic island of Svalbard is led by the German geologist Friedrich and his assistant Leni. They are accompanied by three renowned scientists, two Englishmen and the Swede Gustav de Geer, as well as a Norwegian ship captain with his Russian crew. Despite the great enthusiasm for their research mission, the work of geologists will soon be affected by the growing political tensions. This is even more so when Gustav and Leni fall in love on the evening of Hitler’s invasion of Poland …
